Things To Do in Holmdel, New Jersey

Holmdel Township is a municipality located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The Raritan Valley region is home to the township. It lies in the middle of the Raritan Bayshore. It is located within the New York Metropolitan Area. The population of the township was 16,773. It was established by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, February 23, 1857. It was created from parts of Raritan Township, now Hazlet. The source of the township’s names is not known. Some sources indicate that it was named for Holmes, a family who settled the area in the early days. Others suggest that Holmdel Township was named for Holmdel Del, a Dutch word meaning “pleasant vale”. Holmdel lies 15 miles west of the Jersey Shore. It is well-known for its historical and current connections to Bell Labs. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered significant evidence for the Big Bang in a Bell Labs facility in Holmdel. Both of them won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Steven Chu was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in recognition of his laser cooling in Holmdel. 

 

Holmdel Park was established in 1962 and covers 565 acres (229ha). It also includes the Historic Longstreet Farm which recreates farm life in the 1890s. The Holmdel Arboretum, formerly the David C. Shaw Arboretum, is 22 acres and was established in 1963. This preserves examples of the trees, shrubs, and plant life found in Monmouth County. When you’re in town, you can also drop by the Vietnam Era Museum & Educational Center. The center was opened in 1998. The museum covers 5,000 sq. ft. It was built at a cost of $3.5 million and opened in 1998. It is located next to the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Another place you can visit is the Holmes Hendrickson House which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home was built in Dutch vernacular architecture by William Holmes in the mid-1750s. You can also drop by The Baptist Church of Middletown. This was the first state-based Baptist congregation. It was established in 1688 and its current structure was built in 1809. After a merger with the Holmdel Dutch Reformed Church in 1699, the Holmdel Community Church now includes the Holmdel Community Church.

Another place you can’t miss is Bao Dumplings And Bao Tea. They serve authentic Chinese dumplings and noodles as well as a wide variety of tea drinks. Reviews are always great about this place so it’s surely something you need to have on your list when you’re in town for a visit.
